Gender Beliefs of Male Nursery Teachers Working at Infant Home

Yusuke AOKI Sonoko EGAMI

This study aims investigating gender beliefs of male nursery teachers working at infant home. In Study 1, we conducted a questionnaire survey and compared the measures of egalitarian sex role attitudes, communion-agency scale, nurturance scale, and Big 5 between male nursery teachers (37 people) and ordinary men (37 people). As a result, male nursery teachers have higher gender-neutral idea and nurturer than ordinary men. In Study 2, we interviewed 7 male nursery teachers to ask about the reason why they became nursery teachers, their current work circumstances, and their motivation and sense of responsibility. It clarified that they have gender-neutral belief about the typical model of a nursery teacher, the motivation and the sense of responsibility, however, they are also bound with gender bias of the task of nursery and the relationships with children. The conflict of their gender belief revealed by triangulation was discussed.

Factors Contributing to Childcare Practitioners' Acceptability of Advisory Council Reports:
A Survey Experiment

Takuma YAMANAKA

The purpose of this article was to examine how varying the attributes of the chairperson and members of the advisory council dealing with childcare policy influences Childcare Practitioners'(CP) acceptability of the report using a survey experiment. I crafted contents of the experimental survey to CPs drawing on research of symbolic epresentation, which posits that the attributes of representatives affect the feelings of those whom they represent. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis showed that CPs tend to accept the report submitted by the council that includes more members from the same social groups as themselves even when controlling for the effect of the nature of the report. Moreover, the upward tendency of CPs' acceptance was found when the chairperson was one of CP members. These findings suggest that CPs consider which extent to CPs' own attributes are reflected in the social composition of the council to decide acceptability of the report. This paper provided the experimental evidence indicating that CP perceptions of legitimacy to advisory council reports stem from demographic similarities between the council members including the chairperson and CPs affected by the report.

Cooperation and collaboration among caregivers is an important subject to investigate in order to develop higher quality childcare. The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics of collaboration among caregivers who have been taking care of children under three years old for more than 11 years from a social capital standpoint. To achieve this objective, we conducted semi-structured interviews with four child caregivers and analyzed their narratives. As a result, we were able to derive 47 sub-themes and 24 themes. The themes were then categorized to demonstrate nine experiences for working with and collaborating with fellow childcare providers. In the case of the four child caregivers' preschools, it was shown that they worked together with their colleagues in a spirit of trust and reciprocity in an organization with a network that facilitated information exchange and role sharing. In order to improve the quality of cooperation and collaboration among caregivers of children under three years old, it may be useful to be aware of fostering social capital in this way.

The Prospect of Music Workshop in Training Courses for Early Childhood Educators:
Through Analysis of Student's Behavior Confronting the Unexpected Situations

Nanae KOIZUKA

The aim of this study was to examine the potential for and challenges of learning via workshop by highlighting a music workshop that was planned and conducted with students as part of a training course for early childhood educators.
The current work focused on settings involving "unexpected" events, and it analyzed and examined the interactions between and the speech and behavior of children and students and among students themselves.
Workshops have been conducted in various fields. Over the past few years, they have garnered attention as a forum to empower individuals and society. Workshops provide important perspectives in childcare settings as well, so this study conducted a workshop in a class. Students designed and facilitated a 30-minute music workshop for 4-year-olds. Case studies revealed that while unexpected events were negative, they were also positive events that promoted students' awareness and learning. By confronting the "unexpected" in a workshop, students realized the importance of advanced preparation and the importance of reading the situation and responding flexibly without following the lesson plan too closely, and they also developed an interest in children. Results suggested that a workshop is an important experience that provides students with an opportunity to learn during training.
